Check the request, not just the sender's name

A familiar name or number does not make a request safe. Someone may be impersonating a relative or using a compromised account. Be cautious if the message asks for money, sign-in codes, payment-card details, or secrecy. Call the person using a number you already have—not the number supplied in the suspicious text.

Watch for unpaid toll and package-delivery messages

A text claiming you owe a toll, missed a delivery, or face an urgent penalty may be trying to rush you into paying. Do not use its link to resolve the claim. Open the delivery company's official app or type the toll agency's known website yourself. A message with no obvious warning signs can still be fraudulent.
